Rogues with Rifles

Robert Griffith | @Rob_Griffith_

Abstract

The 5/60th were the first rifle battalion in the British Army and one of only three units to serve throughout the Peninsular War. Frequently praised by Wellington they were at the forefront of most of the battles in Portugal, Spain and France between 1808 and 1814. This talk outlines the origins of the unit and then uses the careers of some of the riflemen to illustrate the battalion’s part in the campaign.
